Recently, with rising temperatures, many construction workers have messaged me privately with reports of generator starting difficulties, high water temperature alarms, and even complete breakdowns. Upon inquiry, I discovered it’s all due to neglecting seasonal maintenance! Today, I’ll share some practical tips on how to properly maintain your diesel generator set in spring. Remember to share and save this!
Why are generators particularly “delicate” in spring?
First, the air is thick with willow and poplar catkins. These fluffy substances, like cotton, coat the radiator, drastically reducing heat dissipation and causing high water temperatures.
Second, the air is humid. In the south, there’s the humid season, and in the north, there’s heavy fog in the mornings and evenings. Moisture weakens the insulation of electrical components, potentially leading to short circuits.
Third, the diesel fuel wasn’t properly switched for the season. Still using winter diesel? As soon as temperatures rise, the fuel supply system will be the first to fail.
Don’t wait until it breaks down to regret it; check these 6 areas immediately!
⚡ I. Fuel System: Time for a “Blood Transplant”
The -10 and -35 diesel fuel used in winter should be replaced in spring! Using low-pour-point diesel fuel when temperatures rise actually reduces its fluidity, making the injectors prone to clogging.
Correct Procedure: Empty the winter diesel fuel from the tank and replace it with 0# summer diesel fuel. Also, check the diesel filter; replace it if it’s dirty. It only costs a few tens of yuan, don’t skimp on this small expense and end up losing more.
⚡ II. Radiator: Willow Catkins are a “Killer”
This is a top priority for spring maintenance! The radiator fins have small gaps, allowing willow catkins and dust to get in and not escape. Washing it with a water gun only makes the mud and dirt stick even tighter, completely ruining the radiator.
Correct Procedure: Use a high-pressure air gun to blow the dirt out from the back of the radiator. After blowing, check the antifreeze; top up if low, replace if dirty. Never add water, as it will cause the radiator to overheat in summer!
⚡ III. Engine Oil: Viscosity Must Be Correct
In winter, many people use thinner engine oil (such as 5W-30) for easier starting. Should they continue using it in warmer weather? The engine’s high-temperature protection won’t keep up, leading to accelerated wear.
Correct Operation: Change to 15W-40 or 20W-50 summer engine oil according to the local temperature. Also, check the oil dipstick; add oil if low, and replace it immediately if it’s blackened or contaminated.
⚡ IV. Air Filter: Don’t Let the Engine “Wear a Mask”
A clogged air filter restricts airflow, leading to incomplete combustion, black smoke, reduced power, and increased fuel consumption. In spring, with more pollen and willow catkins, air filters get dirty faster than in winter.
Correct Operation: Open the air filter cover and remove the filter element to check. If it’s not too dirty, blow it out with compressed air; if it’s too dirty or has a hole? Don’t hesitate, replace it!
⚡ V. Electrical System: Moisture Prevention is Key
High humidity in spring can easily cause battery terminals to oxidize and grow mold, resulting in poor contact and starting problems. Moisture in the controller can also cause garbled alarms.
Correct Operation: Check the battery voltage; it should not be lower than 12.6V. Add distilled water if the electrolyte level is low. Clean any oxides on the terminals with sandpaper and apply a little grease or petroleum jelly to prevent oxidation. If possible, use a megohmmeter to test the motor insulation.
⚡ VI. Generator Body: Perform a “Check-up” While You’re at It
Start the generator set and listen to the sound; check the gauges for stability and look for any oil or water leaks. Tighten any loose chassis bolts and touch up any rusted ones with paint.
What If You Don’t Use It for a Long Time?
Many generator sets are used as backups and are only used once a month. Note: The less you use it, the more likely it is to break down! It is recommended to start it under no-load for about 20 minutes once a month. This charges the battery, lubricates the components with engine oil, and uses engine heat to expel internal moisture—a triple benefit.
